The US Virgin Islands recently welcomed a brand new hotel when The Pink Palm Hotel officially opened its doors in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The luxurious resort is located on Crystal Gade Street, downtown Charlotte Amalie and boasts 28 rooms and suites. 

The brand new hotel is actually a renovation of the site of the popular 1940s and 1950s Smith’s Fancy, which was much sought after guesthouse for the Hollywood elite at the time. It was subsequently utilized as an apartment complex before its renovation to its current state. 

The Pink Palm Hotel website states “the property features an outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and multiple curated gardens throughout the space set into the hillside overlooking the harbor.

Each of the 28 rooms have a unique layout with a bedroom, sitting area, thick curtains, bedside table, wardrobe, mini refrigerator, and in-room coffee machines. The rooms also have smart TVs, free high-speed internet. The greatest highlight of the stay would be the gorgeous water view that can be enjoyed from many of the rooms and the poolside common area.”

Be sure to note, however, in order to access the rooms and to the different hotel areas, you are required to climb several flights of stairs. Also due to the very limited parking space available, taxis are the preferred mode of transport. Renting your own vehicle while staying here is not recommended.

About St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the gateway isle of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. It’s known for its beaches, snorkeling spots as well as its duty-free shopping. It is one of the three main islands which comprise the US Virgin Islands. The others are St. Croix and St.John.

It’s main town, Charlotte Amalie, is also the capital of the US Virgin islands. It was founded by the Danish in the 1600s and is a busy cruise-ship port today.

Historic buildings which can be found in St. Thomas include: 

  • Blackbeard’s Castle – a 1679 watchtower which was famously named in reference to the area’s pirate history 
  • Fort Christian which was built in the 17th-century 
  • The second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere

What to do in St. Thomas

St. Thomas is not just about the duty-free shopping, although you can get quite a lot of inexpensive items at Ocean Surfari or St John Brewers at the Waterfront. U.S. citizens can bring home up to 1,600 USD worth of merchandise duty-free

There are several activities to enjoy such as relaxing on the lovely sun kissed beaches or or water activites such as scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing or big game fishing.

While exploring all St. Thomas has to offer be sure to visit the Coral World Ocean Park, the Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden and the Pirates Treasure Museum to truly explore all St. Thomas has to offer.

Getting there

As the name suggests, US Virgin Islands is a United States territory. As such, when traveling to the islands, U.S. citizens enjoy all the conveniences of domestic travel – including online check-in. Travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands does not require a passport for U.S. citizens arriving from Puerto Rico or the U.S. mainland.

Entry requirements for non-U.S. citizens are the same as for entering the United States from any foreign destination. Upon departure, a passport is required for all but U.S. citizens.

There are many major airlines flying out of the US mainland and Puerto Rico as well within the Caribbean fly to the US Virgin Islands. The airports are located in St. Thomas – Cyril E. King Airport and St. Croix –  Henry E. Rohlsen Airport. While you can, and it is easier to fly directly to St. Thomas, you can save a lot by flying into St. Croix first and heading across to St. Thomas via ferry. Once you arrive in St. Croix there are ferries available to travel to St. Thomas and the other islands.

You can also arrive in the US Virgin Islands via cruise ship as St. Thomas is one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean. It boasts more than 500 arrivals each year docking in the West Indian Company dock on the eastern edge of the St. Thomas harbor.
