The Lusca, a legendary creature from Bahamian folklore, is described as half-shark, half-octopus, and is said to inhabit the underwater caves, tunnels, and blue holes scattered throughout the Caribbean. Predominantly, the Lusca is believed to reside in the underwater caves and blue holes surrounding the Bahamas Islands, with a particular affinity for the waters near Andros, the largest Bahamian island.

Covering an area of 13,878 sq. km, The Bahamas (all coral in origin) occupies the larger partthe of Lucayan Archipelago and comprises a group of nearly 700 (atolls) ring-like coral islands, and (cays) small, low islands composed largely of coral or sand.
