The Islands of

Montserrat is a mountainous Caribbean island, part of the Lesser Antilles chain and a British Overseas Territory. Its Soufrière Hills volcano erupted in the 1990s, causing significant damage to the south of the island and leading to the creation of an exclusion zone. The north of the island is largely unaffected, and has black-sand beaches, coral reefs, cliffs and shoreline caves

Destinations

Known as the “Emerald Isle” of the Caribbean, magnificent Montserrat survives as a somber spectacle of nature’s awe-inspiring power. The north side of the island puckers with lush peaks, and to the south lies an eerie lunar scape of deserted settlements and blackened valleys scarred by a series of devastating volcanic eruptions that began in 1995.

Today, the active Soufrière Hills Volcano and its ash-smothered surrounds lie in an exclusion zone comprising more than half the island. Police-escorted sightseeing tours take tourists into the zone, and several hilltop vantage points provide breathtaking views of the devastated areas, including the former capital of Plymouth.

EXPLORE THE ISLAND

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory and a part of the Leeward Islands chain in the Caribbean. It has an area of 102 sq. km (39 sq mi). This mountainous, pear-shaped island is currently increasing in size because of the build up of volcanic deposits on the southeast coast.

The island is measured at 16km (10 miles) long and 11km (7 miles) wide, with rock cliffs rising 15 to 30 m (50-100ft) above the sea and smooth bottomed sandy beaches scattered among coves on the west ( Caribbean) side of the island.

The island’s highest point is located in the Soufriere Hills, but a definitive height is unavailable due to the consistent eruptions of the volcano. Scattered small streams drains the northern reaches of the island
