St. Eustatius is a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean dominated by the Quill, a dormant volcano. Quill National Park has hiking trails along the ocean and around the volcano, which features a rainforest and many species of orchid. Surrounding the island are narrow beaches of volcanic sand. Offshore, St. Eustatius National Marine Park’s dive sites range from coral reefs to shipwrecks.
It’s hard to imagine that this hidden secret Sint Eustatius (Statia in local slang), was once the busiest port of the Caribbean in the eighteenth century. Thousands of large merchant ships visited the island in its heyday every year and it was known as the trading center of the world. It changed hands 22 times before it became one of the Dutch Caribbean islands. Now Statia is a sleepy island where time stood still.
Almost all of the warehouses located in Lower Town transformed into ruins. No Starbuck’s or Mc Donald’s, no shopping malls and all-inclusive resorts but instead a genuine Caribbean atmosphere with friendly locals and little family owned restaurants and bars.

In fact, the entire island is surrounded by a marine park, which stretches from water level to 100ft below the surface, all packed with an amazing abundance of aquatic life.
The island is a haven for nature enthusiasts. It is easy to get around the eight-square-mile land area of St Eustatius, and many people take the opportunity to go hiking when here. The other summits, Boven Mountain and Little Mountain (Signal Hill), are located in the island’s northwestern portion.
