Fostering Eco-Friendly Tourism Across the Caribbean

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has entered into a significant two-year partnership with the global nonprofit Conservation International (CI) to advance nature-positive tourism across the Caribbean region.

On June 11, 2025, a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) headquarters in Barbados. This pivotal agreement sets the stage for a collaborative effort focused on advancing sustainable tourism across the Caribbean. Through this partnership, the signatories aim to promote tourism models that protect biodiversity and natural ecosystems, while strengthening the resilience of local economies. The initiative also emphasizes improving community well-being by fostering inclusive, responsible, and culturally sensitive tourism experiences that offer lasting social and economic value.

This collaboration supports the CTO’s Reimagine 2025–2027 Plan, which advocates for forward-thinking, resilient, and inclusive approaches to shaping the future of tourism across the region.

Under this MoU, joint efforts will aim to promote sustainable and nature-friendly tourism by encouraging conservation-focused investments, empowering community-led projects that safeguard biodiversity and local livelihoods, and fostering technical collaboration in research, education, and public engagement. Core areas of focus include strengthening industry capacity, driving tourism investments that benefit conservation, and supporting resilient, nature-based economic practices across the region.

“This partnership marks a meaningful step forward in our mission to build a regenerative, inclusive, and climate-smart tourism sector,” said Dona Regis-Prosper, Secretary-General and CEO of the CTO. “By partnering with Conservation International, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the Caribbean’s rich natural heritage while uplifting the communities that depend on it.”
