Introduction of Guyana Providence Stadium

Providence Cricket Stadium is quite new as compared to the other stadiums in the Caribbean region. It was established in 2006 with the purpose to host the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. The stadium is located just 9 km from the capital city Georgetown. The Government of Guyana is the owner of this stadium and it is operated by the Guyana cricket board.

Seating capacity of Guyana Providence Stadium

With the fact that the stadium was built to host the ICC Cricket World Cup, it has a huge seating capacity. It can flawlessly accommodate up to 15000 people. The stadium has three stands and nearly 4000 people can be seated on them. Plus, there is also a grass mound. Primarily meant for cricket matches, the stadium can be used for other cultural and sports events too.

First international matches at Guyana Providence Stadium

As we already said that the stadium was built especially for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, its first ODI match was a world cup match itself. The stadium held its first ODI match between South Africa and Sri Lanka on 28th March 2007. After this world cup match, the stadium went on to host 6 ODI matches of the tournament and they all were super eight-stage matches. The first international test match came 1 year later for this stadium. It was in March 2008 between West Indies and Sri Lanka. The stadium took another 2 years to host its first T20 match that was between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in April 2010.
